Marek: Getting Into the Spirit

Waiting in the dark, Marek put his hands in his pockets and whistled. He congratulated himself on having sewn pockets into his Hallowe'en costume.

He stopped whistling to think out loud, his preferred method of thinking. "Didn't smoke nothin', didn't drink nothin', so logic suggests a supernatural influence."

That Theo girl, she'd have a different idea of what "logic" meant. Should he call her a girl? They were both about to plow into age 30. Did 30-year-old women like being called girls? Gals? He needed to find her phone number.

A light flickered, then glowed steady. A fluorescent, over a sink, illuminating--a kitchen. Functional, mundane, but isolated in the dark, more so because of the thick fog roiling around, covering the floor, hiding everything up to about a foot high.

It looked like the AV fog he'd used as a theater tech in high school and college. It didn't smell like AV fog, fortunately. It kind of smelled like cloves.

Fog aside, it was an old-fashioned kitchen. The fridge had an old-style child-trapper latch. "Like Grandma's kitchen when I was little."

"You're not little anymore."

A figure stood in the middle of the kitchen; it spoke in a whisper that carried as if it were directly in his ear.

It--she? Sounded feminine. She, if so, was half a head shorter than him, maybe five foot five. A white sheet draped over a round head, shoulders narrow but square. From there the sheet hung straight down.

There were circular eyeholes, flat black. Some kind of mesh, maybe. Those weren't the only holes--there were a couple dozen, scattered all over the form.

She stepped forward, and the sheet--very light, maybe silk--draped against breasts and hips. The silky whisper continued. "But you're not too big for Trick or Treat, are you, Marek?"

Marek tilted the mask up off his face. "Do I know you? Love your outfit."

She tilted her head. "I had a little trouble with the scissors. Marek, you are in the realm of my people. You will have to do with a number of ghosts tonight."

This was awesome. "This is awesome. What does 'have to do with' mean?"

"That's for you to decide." She drifted closer. She either walked very smoothly or was on wheels.

"How many ghosts is that, exactly?"

"An unspecified number."

"Is it three ghosts, like in A Christmas Carol?"

"Don't worry about numbers."

"Is it thirteen ghosts, like in that movie 13 Ghosts?"

"It depends." It was an exasperated whisper by now. She was very close to him.

"Okay, sorry. Do you always whisper? I thought ghosts moaned."

She was silent for a moment. "Touch me."

"Are you sure--"

"I haven't been touched in--Here." She moved her sheet so that one of the round holes coincided with the tip of her left breast.

He could see nothing but a circle of utter dark. To his fingertips, it felt like--

"You feel like effervescence covered with velvet. I don't know what that means."

"You want a ghost who moans? You'd better get under here."

And she flew straight up, higher than Marek's head. Still no sign of feet, just darkness
